Doug Groothuis asks that and other unsettling questions about the state of contemporary preaching. I suspect that the answer to many of his questions is, "They want to keep their jobs."

Too many preachers think that people don't want to hear scripture. They are right, in the sense that some people don't want to hear it. But since when are we trying to accommodate those people?
We need to let scripture do the work and stop being so clever ourselves. Some preachers don't believe Hebrews 4:12: The word of God is living and active, sharper than any double edged sword . . .
We have become a church of consumerism where we want to please people's ears so they will keep coming back. We talk about grace and freedom but not justice and sin. We become the church to please people rather than God.
Wow after reading through this link and all the comments I am going to stop complaining about my church community. Is it really that bad out there?
That any pastor would try to justify wimpy, content-free sermons is just plain sad. The responders to Groothuis' article who support their tepid sermons by claiming that's how Jesus would preach are seriously devoid of understanding of the Scripture and of the nature of Jesus' ministry. As unmuzzled implies, yes, it really is that bad out there. And that string of comments is evidence.
